What is Jin Shin Jyutsu®?

The name Jin Shin Jyutsu literally translated means:
Jyutsu – Art
Shin – Creator
Jin – Man of Knowing and Compassion
“The Art of the Creator through man of knowing and compassion.”

Jin Shin Jyutsu® is an ancient art of harmonising the life energy in the body. It does this by helping to release tensions which are the cause of various symptoms in the body. Our bodies contain several energy pathways that feed life into all the cells. When one or more of these paths become blocked, this damming effect may lead to discomfort or even pain. This blockage or stagnation will not only disrupt the local area but will eventually disharmonise the complete path or paths of the energy flow.

Jin Shin Jyutsu employs twenty-six 'safety energy locks' along energy pathways that feed life into our bodies. When one or more of these pathways that feed life into our bodies become blocked, the resulting stagnation can disrupt the local area and eventually disharmonise the complete path of energy flow. Holding these energy locks in combination can bring balance to mind, body and spirit. Jin Shin Jyutsu is an innate part of man's wisdom – simplifying the complexities of existence - and is truly an Art of Living. Through Jin Shin Jyutsu we learn that we are endowed with the ability to harmonise and balance ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally.

History of Jin Shin Jyutsu

The Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu was born of innate wisdom and passed down from generation to generation by verbal teachings. According to ancient records, Jin Shin Jyutsu was widely known before the birth of Gautama (Buddha, India) and before the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Things – Japan, A.D 712).

Over time the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu was practiced by fewer people until it was nearly forgotten completely. It was not until early in the 1900's that the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu was revived by a Japanese man named Jiro Murai, who came from a line of medical professionals. In his youth Jiro Murai led a reckless and indulgent life and eventually became seriously ill, to the point of near death. After clearing himself of his life-threatening illness, Master Jiro Murai devoted the rest of his life to the research and development of Jin Shin Jyutsu, gathering insight from a range of experiences and resources, including the Kojiki.

The knowledge Jiro Murai gained was passed on to an American born Japanese woman named Mary Burmeister, who brought it to the United States in the 1950's. Mary began teaching the Art to others in the early 1960's and today; there are thousands of students throughout the United States and around the world.

What does a Jin Shin Jyutsu Treatment involve and how long does it take?

A Jin Shin Jyutsu session generally lasts about an hour, in which the client remains clothed throughout. It does not involve massage, manipulation of muscles, or use of drugs or substances. After listening to the client (including the pulse), the practitioner chooses the individualised treatment flow(s). The treatment flow involves the practitioner placing his hands on the client’s body on specific areas called 'safety energy locks' in a particular sequence. This helps to harmonise and restore energy flow and facilitates the reduction of tension and stress which accumulate through normal daily living.

For children, the treatment is the same but shorter in duration, usually lasting for about half an hour. After the treatment, parents can be shown how to apply their hands to their children to further help them. The home treatments can be done on a daily or twice daily basis for approximately 15 minutes.

What are the benefits of Jin Shin Jyutsu?

The most obvious benefit of Jin Shin Jyutsu is a sense of relaxation which helps us to let go of the stress and pain of the body.

Jin Shin Jyutsu promotes balance of the body's energies, which encourage optimal health and well-being, and facilitates our own profound healing capacity.

It is a valuable complement to conventional healing methods, by inducing relaxation and reducing the effects of stress.

It is a suitable treatment for those experiencing stress or health issues or simply for those interested in maintaining and promoting health and well-being.

What is Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help?

Jin Shin Jyutsu can be applied by a trained practitioner, but it can also be applied by yourself, this is known as self help. This involves placing your hands on various points (safety energy locks) of your body for a couple of minutes to relieve accumulated tensions.

When learning Jin Shin Jyutsu you are engaged in self-study or self-help. Through the wisdom of 'now know myself' we recognise the wisdom of the body, and we learn to interpret the messages provided and utilise them to restore balance.

To learn how to apply your hands in self help, you can attend a self help class or you can begin by reading Mary’s Burmeisters self help books. In addition you can start by reading Alice Burmeister’s book Touch of Healing.
